Description

A nice example of a large 1870s brass combination Railroad Vernier compass made and signed by "W. & L. E. Gurley Troy NY". The instrument incorporates a 3rd plate to allow turning angles independent of the needle; this is the form of early compass instrument which eventually evolved into the transit instrument during the 1830s. The compass has a 5~1/2" needle and two vernier windows on the large 7~3/4" by 16" long limb/mainplate.
The instrument is easily datable by the hand engraving, which dates it prior to 1878-9 when Gurley started using an engraving machine. Also, the lower motion socket as well as the slow-motion tangent screw are both early styles. The sight vanes are fit with a swing-away peep sight and side-graduations to allow rough vertical readings. This instrument is sold with an old display stand which incorporates a brass ball and socket joint which, with some machining, could be made to fit this compass exactly. The instrument is in working order. It shows traces of the original lacquer finish and is complete with the original dovetailed case, also in very good condition. A very nice example of a very rare 1870s American surveyors/engineers railroad vernier compass.
