Description

This wooden surveyor's compass was made by Thomas Salter Bowles (1765/70 - post 1821) of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Information regarding Bowles can be found on pages 124 to 126 in "Early American Scientific Instruments and Their Makers" by Silvio Bedini. This instrument is from Mr. Bedini's collction and is pictured on page 127. It measures 12" long with a 5 3/8" compass box and 3 3/4" needle. The needle seeks north and shows the early "N" and "S" inlet. The sight vanes show interesting early repairs. Reflections off the glass are seen in some of the images. Payment is preferred by cashier's checks and money orders; personal/business checks require ten days to clear.
