Description

This unusual mining transit has "inclined" standards, to enable the user to sight down very steep slopes with extreme accuracy. It is called the "McNair Pattern", as it was Thomas S. McNair who suggested that the inclined standard solar transit (designed by F.R.Seibert of the U.S. Coast Survey) be converted into a more suitable mining transit. In 1875, William J. Young & Sons made the new mining transit for McNair, and offered it in their instruments catalog as "Young's Improved Mining Transit No.4". This fine example is signed on the compass face: "8508 Young & Sons Philadelphia", and was made in 1909. It has an eleven inch erecting telescope with a six inch level vial attached. The cross-hairs are in place, and the optics are clear. The compass, which has a four inch needle, reads to half degrees. The five inch vertical circle has a least reading of one minute, as does the six inch horizontal limb. All motions move freely, and the instrument is in excellent working condition. It retains the original finish of brass and aluminum, and has not been polished. The original detachable counterweight is included, as is the lens cap, screwdriver, sunshade, and mahogany box wth original factory labels. An extension leg tripod and plumbob, which may not be original, are also included. This is a great opportunity to add the instrument known as the "American Eccentric" to your collection of fine mining transits. Only a few of these transits are in private collections. Buyer pays actual shipping costs, to be determined at close of auction. Payment by cashier's check.
