This is K&E Expedition Plane Table Alidade catalog No. N5209A with a 7-inch achromatic terrestrial telescope. The serial number is 42263 which dates it to about 1920. The 16-power telescope has a prismatic eyepiece to provide for viewing through its low mounting position. There is also a detachable striding level, and a trough compass with 4-inch needle is mounted on the 11-inch blade. The blade is also equipped with a fish-eye bubble for leveling the plane table board when in use, although it now contains a less than normal amount of fluid. The vertical arc has a range of elevation to about 45 degrees and of depression to about 35 degrees.
The alidade is in good condition with all mechanisms working. The optics are clear and complete with stadia type cross hairs. There is one noticeable speck of foreign material alongside the vertical wire. There is a sunshade but no lens cap. It comes with a fitted original leather case that has a broken hinge on the lid and missing the original straps.
If the level bubble were fixed this item would be quite usable for field work. It would also make a great display item for an office desk, or even the coffee table at home.
