ANTIQUE ADAMS TRANSIT
SURVEY INSTRUMENT
A very rare large antique surveying level standing some 10
inches tall and nearly 24 inches long with its display mount
(that’s an eighteen inch rule in the picture), signed on the
compass circle in script Adams,
Charring Crofs, London .
The detachable telescope has a dust slide and sliding
adjustments to the eyepiece lens, for focussing the cross
hairs and fine focus by thumbwheel rack & pinion. A bubble
level is mounted beneath the telescope in the middle. The
telescope tube rests on two hinged “Y” clamps secured by its
brass tapered pins. The “Y” clamps are adjustable for height,
one with a clamping screw and the other with a worm screw for
fine adjustment.
The outer compass scale is graduated clockwise 0-360
degrees. The inner scale is engraved in four 0 to 90 degree
quadrants and has a compass rose with eight cardinal points
engraved.
The shaped steel needle has a brass cap and is mounted on a
jewelled pivot over a steel spike and has a working needle
clamp.
The instrument has a staff mounting socket to the underside
of the horizontal plate into which a display stand has been
fixed.
This is a very rare and early instrument by the best know
instrument manufacturing family of the 18th century, supplying
only the best instruments to King George and the Prince of
Wales. Dudley Adams was at Charring Cross from 1788 to 1796.
Despite its age of some 200 years, the instrument is in fine
working order.
