This auction is for an Antique,
W.&L.E. Gurley, Surveyors Transit, with Tripod, and Original
Box. This is an Early, Transit, dating back to the 1870s. The
Transit has no Serial Numbers, and according to my research, Serial
Numbers were not used on these Transits, until after, 1880. There
are some Batch Numbers, on some of the Transit, Mounting Parts. The
Face of the Compass, is marked, W.&L.E. Gurley, Troy, New York.
I am not an expert on these instruments, but I can tell you, what I
know about this one. It comes with 3, Glass, Liquid Filled Levels,
that are all intact, and not broken, it still has the Lens
Crosshairs, 1 Vertical, and 1 Horizontal, and from what I can tell,
all of the adjusting knobs, work fine. I trained the instrument, on
an object, approx. 50ft. away, an was able to focus the instrument
with no problem. The Lens is clear, without any fogging, and the
locking mechanism, for the Compass Dial, works fine. The Compass
Dial is complete, and seems to work fine. The instrument has its
Lens Cover, and its Lens Shade. There are 2, Plumb Bobs, included,
and a small Pin Wrench. All of the Leveling Parts, on the Lower
Section, work fine. The Transit comes with its Original, Dovetailed,
Wooden Box, that is in Good Condition, on the Inside, although the
Outsides of the Box, do show some ware, from use. The Original,
Leather Carrying Strap, was broken, and only the Strap Ends, are
still on the Box. The Locking Mechanism is missing, although the
Lid, Hold Down Hooks, are still on the Box. The Wooden Tripod, that
came with the Transit, was Made by Brunson, of Kansas City, Mo. The
Tripod measures 38", when Fully Closed, and extends to approx. 65",
when Fully Extended. The Tripod features, Brass Locking Straps, and
the Pointed Feet, on the Bottom of the Legs, are still intact. The
Tripod is in Good Condition. I can't figure out exactly how the
Transit mounts, to the Tripod. Both pieces are threaded, but they do
not fit each other. There may be an adapter, that should be with the
Tripod, for attaching the Transit, that is no longer with it. I
simply sat the Transit on the Tripod, to take photographs. I have
not tried to clean, or polish, this all Brass Transit, nor have I
tried to clean the Lens. The Transit, Tripod, and the Original Box,
have all been used, and are all being auctioned, in As Found,
Condition. This is a rather Heavy Instrument, that will weigh
approx. 35 pounds, with the Box, and Tripod. I must insist, that
this Very Old, Very Delicate Instrument, be Professionally Packed
for shipping, to insure there is no Damage, and Insurance is
Strongly Suggested! Exact Shipping Costs, will be determined, at the
end of the auction, according to your Zip Code, and are likely to be
a little pricey! Please feel free to email me, with any questions,
concerning this Very Nice, Surveyors, Transit. I will do my best, to
answer your questions. Also, if you need additional photos, of
specific parts, of the Transit, I will honor those requests within
24 hrs. Thanks for Looking!
