Description
A RARELY ENCOUNTERED SIGNED HELLER & BRIGHTLY TRANSIT FROM PHILADELPHIA. This fine HELLER & BRIGHTLY TRANSIT is signed in flowing script: "HELLER & BRIGHTLY - MAKERS - PHILAD'A" - with a Serial No. of "6445." The two bubble levels on the base near the veriers windows are in perfect working order. The large incised calibrated bubble level atop the telescope tube has a few minute cracks in the glass, and the fluid has evaporated there. The rack and pinion focus works perfectly. There is no apparent cross-hairs and it appears that there never was. All vertical and horizontal verniers and adjustments are in full working order. The compass needle lifter adjustment knob works, but the riser plate under the needle and compass glass is alittle sticky - but does move somewhat - thus the compass needle does not move freely as one would prefer. The needle riser mechanism probably just needs a good cleaning and adjustment - as nothing appears to be broken here. The finish is all original, with atypical wear from general field use and the tripod level head and attachment is intact and in full working order. With the aforementioned minor problems, this is basically a good example of a rare surveying instrument by a celebrated maker. THERE IS NO BOX AND NO TRIPOD. FOR THE DISCRIMINATING COLLECTOR OF SURVEYING EQUIPMENT.
Checks may have up 14 days bank clearance period, while m.o. or cert. bank checks will enjoy immediate dispatch. Lucky buyer pays s/h. Insurance extra. Payment due within 10 days of auctions end. HAPPY BIDDING!

NOTICE: Please note that we omitted certain details of construction from the above main listing as follows: THE TELESCOPE TUBE IS 12 1/2" FULLY EXTENDED - and 11 3/8" CLOSED. As well, the MAIN COMPASS FACE is 4 1/2" in DIA. and THE COVERGLASS TO SAME is 5 3/8" in DIA. The over-all height is 14" TALL to the top of the main bubble level on the telescope tube in the perfectly level horizontal position.

IT HAS JUST BEEN BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION, THAT, ACCORDING TO THE SERIAL NUMBER FOUND ON THIS INSTRUMENT:

This HELLER & BRIGHTLY was one of a group of transits assigned to master instrument maker Alfons Pistor on May 13, 1890 and that it was sold to WILLIAMS, BROWN & EARLE, the big industrial supply house in Philly.

On May-19-00 at 15:21:06 PDT, seller added the following information:

FURTHER NOTE: Upon closer examination, we have noticed that the two small "screw end-stops" are lacking from each end of the curved horizontal vernier scale attached to the one of the two upright standard supports. Not a big deal, but we just thought that it should be mentioned.
