Description

19th C. GURLEY SURVEYOR'S COMPASS

4th Quarter, 19th C., 4 1/2" Vernier Surveyor's Compass, signed W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y. 4" long compass needle, 2 spirit levels, a chaining leg out-keeper, 2 site veins; one with dual peep sites, the other with graduation marks from 0 to 23 degrees. A staff socket, an original plumb bob, and lens cap. Complete with fitted box and retailer's label.
This instrument is finished bright retaining much of its gold lacquer. The item is complete and packed in its original case with its plumb bob noting that the spur gear to the vernier rack is missing. Except as noted, this instrument is complete and has never been buffed or refinished retaining its original character. 4 1/2" Gurley Survey Compasses are rarer and harded to find than the largest models as there were fewer of them made. The dealer label from J.A.S.W., Queen & Co. is in good shape applied to the inside of the lip. The box measures 13 3/4" X 6 1/2" X 4 1/2" and is constructed from walnut. There is no key.

Each period Van Cort Instruments will be auctioning a variety of optical treasures and other products we manufacture. Take a look around our site for what's up next.

Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the winning bidder and the seller.
