Description
Miner's Plummet, marked YOUNG & SONS PHILA. on the spreader. 7" long, 2" diameter body, with fully gimbled mount and 17" long original chains. The cap removes and under is a wick that extends into the body of the plummet. This cavity was filled with oil to fuel the plummet. In mining, surveyors would mark the roof of the mine rather than the floor, as any mark on the floor would soon be obliterated or covered with dirt. The plummet would hang from the roof of the shaft, with the gimbled mount keeping the flame upright. The surveyor would site to the flame. These are perhaps the rarest type of plumb bob, sought by both tool collectors and mining collectors. Body has some minor surface scratches and dents. I suspect this plummet was probably never used as the condition is very, very good. Steel tip still maintains its point. Check must clear, MO goes out the next day. Packing, shipping and insurance will add $15. Good luck on this exceptionally rare piece.
