Description
Description of this book is as follows:

AUTHOR: Charles Davies LL.D

TITLE: Elements of SURVEYING AND NAVIGATION, With a description of the instruments and the necessary tables.

PUBLISHER: A. S. Barnes & Co.

PLACE & DATE: 51 John Street Cincinati, 1850

EDITION: Revised Edition, original Elements of Surveying, published by the author in 1830 was designed as a text-book for the Military Academy.

PAGES & SIZE: 100 pages 8 1/4 by 5 1/4 inches

CONDITION: The cover is scuffed and is splitting at the spine. Pages have a lot of foxing. There are pencil calculation on the end pages and inside covers.

COMMENTS: The author was a distinguished mathematician and a graduate of West Point in 1815. He was later professor of mathematics there and then at N.Y.U. and Columbia. The system he taught was developed by Colonel Jared Mansfield and all surveys of public lands in the U.S. were done using the Mansfield-Davies methods. Davies died in 1876. This book contains 6 pull out plates 8 by 10 1/2 inches, that show equipment and coventional signs adopted by the Topographical Bureau and which is now used by the United States Engineers in all their charts and maps as seen on plates 5 and 6.
