Description
Description of this book is as follows:
AUTHOR: William A. Burt, U. S. Deputy Surveyor.
TITLE: A Key to the Solar Compass, and Surveyor's Companion, comprising all the rules necessary for use in the field. Also descriptions of the linear surveys, and public land system of the United States; notes on the barometer, suggestions for an outfit for a survey of four months, etc., etc.
PUBLISHER: Printed for the author by William S. Young. Young was a mathematical and optical instrument maker.
PLACE & DATE: Philadelphia, 1858.
EDITION: Unknown, likely the Second Edition. The book is copyrighted 1854.
PAGES & SIZE: 84 pages of text followed by 118 pages of tables, each with seperate pagination. 4 1/2 x 6 3/8".
CONDITION: The book is bound in a black leather case with protective flap for use in the field. The extremities of the case are rubbed. The text is slightly dusty but in very good condition. Surveying notes in pencil at end may indicate that this copy was used in surveying.
CONTENT: Burt's Solar Compass was invented in 1836 by William Austin Burt, a land surveyor from Mt. Vernon Michigan. The Solar Compass was used extensively in the mid 19th century to set meridian (north-south) lines in federal land surveys. While surveying with an inaccurate magnetic compass, Burt discovered iron ore in Michigan. This discovery of what was to become the Marquette Range was followed by finds on the Menominee and Gogebic ranges. When developed, these ranges made Michigan the leading iron ore producer in the nation. Michigan's Burt Lake was named for him.
The text includes chapters on the use of rafts for crossing rivers and suggestions for outfitting a surveying company. Surveyor General Edward Tiffin noted that...None but Men as hard as a Savage who is always at home in Woods and Swamps [and who] can live upon what they afford, who can travel for Days up to the knees in mud & mire, can drink any fluid he finds, has a knowledge of the lands [and] who are equally patient and persevering under similar hardships can make anything by surveying the kind of Country we have to Survey.
