Description

SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS FOR THE AGE OF DARWIN, PASTEUR - AND SHERLOCK HOLMES

L. Casella, Scientific Instrument Maker. AN ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF SURVEYING, PHILOSOPHICAL, MATHEMATICAL, OPTICAL, PHOTOGRAPHIC, AND STANDARD METEOROLOGICAL INSTRUMENTS, MANUFACTURED BY L. CASELLA, SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT MAKER TO THE ADMIRALTY... (London [1871] 5.5 x 8.5 inches, 260 pages. Original cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover. Extensively illustrated with engraved drawings. Bottom corner of front cover and creased, with bruise on pastedown; smaller crease to upper corner of rear cover; light binding wear and soil; foxing to fore-edge and a some text pages; period engraved bookplate on pastedown. In Good condition overall.

Louis Casella was apparently a scientific researchers as well as a manufacturer of scientific instruments. In the 1860s, he annotated a revised classic "essay on dew", and, as the title-page of this Catalogue indicates, at a London International Exhibition in 1862, he won the only prize medal awarded for Registering Meteorological Instruments.

Weather instruments were certainly Casella's first love. But by the early 1870s, when this Catalogue appeared, he had branched out to produce instruments in virtually every field of scientific endeavor - this Catalogue being twice as long as one he had issued a decade earlier.

Among its offerings:

Meteorological Instruments

Thermometers: Meteorological, Agricultural, Chemical, Brewing

Gauging Instruments

Surveying Instruments

Sun Dials

Nautical Instruments

Optical Instruments

Spectacles and Eye Glasses

Microscopes, Telescopes, Stereoscopes

Photographic Apparatus

Magic Lanterns and Slides

Electrical Machines and Apparatus and Electro-Magnetic Instruments

Voltaic or Galvanic Apparatus and Batteries

Electro-Metallurgical Instruments

Thermo-electrical Instruments and Galvanometers

Pneumatic Apparatus

Hydrostatics and Hydraulics

Diving Apparatus (grouped together with Soda Water and Lemonade Machines!)

Models of Steam Engines, Boats, etc.

Mineralogy, Geology and Conchology

Specific Gravity Instruments

Surgical and Medical Instruments

Chemical and Assay Balances

Chemical Apparatus and India-Rubber Tubing

World Globes

The illustrations (some of which are grouped together in the scans) are marvellous, reminding me of a cross between Pasteur's laboratory and Sherlock Holmes' sitting room.

Scientific Instrument Catalogues from this period are surprisingly uncommon on the rare-book market. We could locate no other 19th century catalogue currently offered for sale by Internet booksellers - only the 1993 reproduction of an 1856 catalogue, priced at $125.
