Description

Old Brass Surveyor’s Compass

The instrument is appr. 15 inches long and 6.75 wide and is labeled “S. Browning & Son Boston.” In the center circle is a large magnetic compass - it is missing the glass cover. On the bottom is a screw which would hold the needle up against the glass, and a round hole for setting it on a tripod or post. There are two levels, one in a north-south direction and one east-west. In the back you see two bars about 6 3/8 by 1 1/8 inches, and in the front are two bolts with large knurled knobs. The knobs hold the bars on the instrument as shown in the second picture. The wood block that holds the knobs is unglued. There are two other unglued pieces, which would indicate that something else belongs in the box. This all comes in a neat box with dovetail corners (one end is unglued). The cover has two little brass latches. In the cover is a label, reading, “S. Browning & Son, No. 67 Broad Street..... Boston, At the Sign of the Quadrant,” and naming the various surveying instruments they make. The whole outfit weighs about 8.3 pounds. A beautiful old piece that needs only the glass to put it in working order.

Buyer pays S&H, 10 pounds from 10986 (8.75 to 15.55 priority mail in the U. S., less for Parcel Post), plus insurance. For your rate, please check the postal calculator at [ http://postcalc.usps.gov/ ]. New Yorkers add tax, 7.25%. Paypal, Visa, MC, AmEx, check, MO, all OK. Terms on my Me page.
