Description
This Compass was made by Gurley of Troy NY and is by my comparisons to Gurley's Manual illustrations..."The Plain Compass" ...it measures 12 1/2" on the main plate and the needle is 4" long. lens/glass to the compass is in perfect condition. I am not cleaning the patina of years off this...we'll leave it to the new owner. HERE"S THE BEST PART...this is from the estate of one of the crew who surveyed the 'Adirondack Wilderness of New York' and the bound report given to the Senate of NY by Virplanck Colvin, Superintendent of NYS Adirondack Survey is included with this compass!! Most fasinating reading of the daily work to map the Adirondack region of NYS in 1873 plus inside the report is the hand-drawn map made by Colvin! I am also including the manual found with this compass: "Gurley's Manual...American Engineers & Surveyors Instruments 46th edition...printed 1912 We want to keep this group together since it was used in an historical survey in the 19th century.
