Description

With it's 7 inch diameter face ~ this is the largest of the W. & L. E. Gurley Surveyor's Compasses.

This beautiful example is in remarkable condition, extremely clean with very little wear or patina to it's original lacquer.

In addition to the pair of 8 inch sites, plumb bob and adjusting tool, this compass comes with a 8 1/2 inch telescope designed to attach to either of the sites. With the addition of this scope, Surveyor's could use this instrument as a accurate transit as well.

The telescope is in good condition with clear optics. It comes with a lens cap. The brass has a rich patina which exhibits some wear and scratching to it's lacquer.

The compass has a 6 inch blued steel needle and is engraved W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y. at the North Position. East & West are reversed, the 2 bubble levels are in excellent condition and the Vernier Scale rotates smoothly.

The compass measures 15 1/2 inches across and has a ball and socket for use with a tripod or jacob's staff.

The wooden case is in good condition with Gurley Label, working key and sturdy leather strap, there is a large splinter of wood missing from the left side of the case. This beautiful and complete Compass outfit also comes with a fitted brass face plate.
