Description

Late 18th or early 19th century American vernier surveyors compass by Lewis Michael of Somerset , Pennsylvania. This magnificent compass is signed “* LEWIS MICHAEL * SOMERSET; FECIT” on the compass face. The instrument measures 14.25” long, the sight vanes are 6” tall, and the needle is 5.5”. It is thought that Benjamin Rittenhouse may have trained Lewis Michael (see the article by Silvio A. Bedini on Lewis Michael in the March/April 1986 edition of Professional Surveyor). This instrument has been professionally restored by a master instrument restoration specialist. Cashiers check or money order only please. Will ship within the United States only.
