Description
This rare pocket compass has a telescopic attachment with vertical circle, making this little instrument a "Transit Compass", suitable for "--land surveying and reconnaissance--". It is signed in script on the compass face: J.W.Queen & Co. Makers Philad'a 5124". Queen made instruments under this name between 1860 and 1893. The 7 7/8" erecting telescope has good optics with the cross-hairs in place. The telescope can be readily detached by thumb screws at the top of each site vane (the design of the telescope mounting bracket pre-dates the inverted "V" type used later by such makers as Gurley). The 3" vertical circle reads to three minutes, and the horizontal movement reads by external vernier to five minutes on the rim of the compass box. Two 1 1/2" level vials are inset on the compass face, and the needle is about 3 1/2" inches in length. This unusual compass is in excellent working condition, and includes a wooden storage box. Buyer pays actual shipping and insurance charges, to be determined after close of auction. Payment by money order or cashier's check, to be received within ten days of close of auction. Thank you for your interest.
