Description
This is a fine example of an uncommon American surveying instrument. The large compass with 5-inch blued steel needle is signed on the face: T. F. Randolph, Cincinnati, O., Patented June 24' 79. The serial number is 1763. The compass face has Randolph's characteristic dark finish with white lettering (click here to see an enlarge view of the compass face) and silvered scales. Two crossed levels (fluid retained), outkeeper, and declination scale are imbedded within the compass face. The telescope is about 7-inches long and retains the crosshairs and has its removable sunshade. A full description of this novel telescopic compass is contained in US patent 216,759 issued on June 24, 1879. To view the patent, click on the image at the right. The present example is exactly as described in the patent with the exception that a conventional pinion knob, instead of an adjustment key, is used to focus the telescope (Randolph must have realized early on that the use of a key for this function was not practical).

The compass and telescope are stored in a leather case with internal wood fittings and leather strap. The leather is stamped in several places with Randolph's signature and the inside bottom has a Randolph label.

Found with the instrument are the tripod and mount. The removable compass mounting has a ball and socket arrangement with four orthogonal centering knobs, clamping knob, and tangent screw adjustment.

The compass and telescope are in good condition. The exposed brass surfaces, which show normal wear from use, have a bronze-like patina. The compass face is clean with full original finishes. The tripod mounting is good and fully functional. It appears that one leg of the tripod has split at one time near the pivot and now has an old repair. The leather case is not in the best of condition. It is dry, stiff, and shows it age. One hinge is detached and the leather strap that closes the case is torn. Finally, the adjustment key described in the patent is lacking (a clock key of the right size would make a good replacement).

The items will be shipped in two packages. Please include $35.00 for shipping and insurance.
