Description

An unusually small surveyors compass and case by a seldom encountered maker Colton, with original case which appears to be mahagoney which has hand made dovetails. There is a small lead plumb bob that fits in a conical shaped compartment in the case and a staff mount (less pivot). Case has two brass latches.The previous owner stamped his name on the inside of the case. Compass face is marked L. Colton & Co., Hartford Conn. with wonderful face engraving and eight compass points. Compass has a chain counter and two level vials both of which retain fluid. Compass face is extremely clean. Compass and sight veins both retain some original lacquer. Please note that at some point someone cut approx. 1/2" of the staff mount off (see photo). This could be easily filed smooth and the compass mounted or a new mount could be machined from brass with very little trouble or expense. The compass is approx. 12 1/2" long, compass face is approx. 4 3/4" in dia., and sight veins are 5 1/2" tall(less mounting screw). This compass has not been cleaned or polished. Compass and case are in overall very good+++ used condition with no cracks or breaks.I accept cashiers checks, money orders, and personal checks. I ship via priority mail insured.
