Description

The book A. Lincoln with Compass and Chain by Adin Baber reports that this, the 1822 edition of Gibson's Surveying by John D. Craig, was one of the surveying textbooks studied by former president Abraham Lincoln.

The full title of this historical surveying treatise is A Treatise on Practical Surveying; Which is Demonstrated From its First Principles, Wherein Every Thing that is Useful and Curious in that Art is Fully Considered and Explained, 3rd ed., Revised, Corrected and Adapted to the Use of Schools, American Surveyors, & c. by John D. Craig, (Baltimore, 1822), 5.3" x 8.8", 326 pages of text plus 152 pages of tables. The illustrations in this edition are located within the text and there are no folded plates. Historians have established that Abraham Lincoln studied surveying using both Gibson's and Flint's texts and Adin Baber in his 1967 authoritative book found that the 1822 Craig edition was the one used by the former president. Another writer had earlier claimed it was the 1814 edition and I don't know which is correct but certainly this book offers the type of information that was used by many early 19th century American surveyors. Gibson's Surveying was first published in Dublin in 1739. A later edition adapted to the use of American surveyors was published in Philadelphia in 1785, followed by a number of later editions. It quickly became the leading surveying reference work in the America. The book gives preference to Gunter's chain while noting a number of other measures were in use in England and Scotland. It also describes instruments such as the circumferentor, theodolite, semicircle and plane table. The American transit had not yet been invented. A more complete review of Gibson's work can be found in The Compleat Surveyor website at www.uzes.net and then following the link to BOOK REVIEWS. The leather cover is intact and the book has a secure binding although the exterior is rough with a few tears and scuffing. The pages show a small amount of moisture staining plus foxing ranging from light to moderate. One blank page inside the rear cover is missing. California residents/recipients add 7.25% sales tax. Search words: survey, surveyor, surveying, transit, compass, level, plumb, engineer.
