Berge
Brass Transit Theodolite C. 1800 English, C. 1800-1810 signed on
the horizontal plate Berge London Late Ramfden, the 28 cm. telescope with
rack focus, suspended bubble level, pale blue green tinted object glass,
and lens cap, secured by twin clamps to the upper part of the vertical
half-circle supported by tapered by cylindrical trunions and inverted - V
frame supports; the vertical circle engraved on one face with scale 70
degree - 0 - 60 degree the vernier incorporating rackwork, two scales on
the other face, the upper 30 degree - 0 - 30 degree Diff. of Hypo &
Base; the horizontal plate with level and cross-bubble (damaged),
cylindrical compass box with finely engraved silvered compass, plain steel
bar needle with jewelled cap, stepped circle dived 0 degree -360 degree on
the upper scale and 0 degree-90 degree four times on the lower; the angled
horizontal circle divided 0 degree - 360 degree with rack and pinion
adjustment and twin verniers; on a four-screw tripod mount with tangent
screw fine adjustment and butterfly nut clamp, 28 cm. high. Mattew Berge
succeeded to the business of Jesse Ramsden, one of the greatest instrument
makers of all time, in 1800. Buyer to pay shipping/handling
