You are looking at a Vintage Keuffel & Esser Surverors Transit Level. Keuffel & Esser Co was founded in 1867 and was incorporated in New Jersey on February 19, 1889.They began manufacturing surveying instruments in 1885. Based on the serial number I Believe this piece to be from around 1899.This is because the serial number listed is 4194 and appears to trace back beyond the reference books available to the person that last serviced this piece. I was however, informed by another Ebay user that this is the date of manufactur which he based on the serial number listed. Transit still has original wooden case as well as key the leather strap appears to have been relpaced. The serial number plate reads "Keuffel & Esser New York Hoboken New Jersey, Chicago, St Louis,San Francisco, Motreal Drawing Matreial, Surveying Instruments, Measuring Tapes #87 serial # 4194 or what Buyer pays shipping + Insurance within the U.S. New Jersey residents please add 6% sales tax.
