Description
This is an exquisite, 4 1/2inch, surveyor's compass / transit from the W.& L.E. Gurley, manufacturers of Civil Engineers' and Surveyors' Instruments. Troy, N.Y. It is complete with would case and leather case. The compass is solid brass, with a steel face, with two folding sights. The face is marked with a star and W. & L.E. Gurley. Troy, N.Y. It has two leveling bubbles. On the back side is a stop for the compass needle and a socket for the staff. Included is a ball-jointed, screw-in socket. Both the socket and the compass have the original lacquer finish. The case is mahogany with brass hinges and clasp. It has the original paper label and is in great condition! The leather carrying case is complete with original straps and buckles. It has a nice, warm, smooth patina. This is a very nice piece. I think it probably dates from the turn of the century, but there is no date on it. $5.00 s/h domestic
