Description |
This is a very rare and unusual surveyer's instrument. I could not find any date on it, but the old man I got it from, told me it was used to do the orginal survey in Dade County, Mo.In the dial it says Henry G Williams, Balitmore. That is the only writing on it , except for the directions(E,NE,NW,W,SW,SE)It is made of solid brass.Very unusual that it only has a single pole, instead of a tripod.Buyer to pay shipping costs and insurance. I accept money orders and checks (checks must clear before shipping)
On Jul-23-00 at 21:06:09 PDT, seller added the following information:I have received numerous e-mails regarding this piece. And have learned more about it. From the information i have received, i believe it to be called a Vernier Compass. From about 1850 (that is the reason for no patent number or patent date)Instead of a tripod the pole it sits on is called a Jacobs Staff. They were used, a lot, for surveying early railroads.

If you're the seller or the high bidder - now what?
Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the
winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and
where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for
the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when
payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the
winning bidder and the seller.
If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
