Up for auction is this very rare book titled: A System of Geometry and Trigonometry: Together with a Treatise on Surveying; Teaching Various Ways of Taking the Survey of a Field; Also to Protract the Same and Find the Area. Likewise Rectangular Surveying; An Accurate Method of Calculating the Area of any field Arithmetically, Without the Necessity of Plotting It. To the whole are added several mathematical tables, necessary for solving questions in trigonometry and surveying; with a particular explanation of those tables, and the manner of using them. Second Edition, compiled from various authors by Abel Flint, A. M. Printed for Oliver Cooke by Lincoln Gleason of Hartford in 1808

This is a very intriguing copy of this book, as you will see in the photos I have shown below. The last few blank pages have been written upon and the excess torn off by what I assume to be other surveyors that have been asked to revise the book. For example the first set of notes that I have shown (some of which I have a little trouble making out read) If the degrees are less than 45, the latitude will be larger, but if they are larger, the departure will be the largest (and so on) then it reads I finished this book April 1 1810 and revised it, THEN SIGNED Daniel E. Hatvoiss? Bacon Academy Botchester Connecticut. The name and city are hard for me to make out so if you need a better larger photo email me. Then there are more of these by other people, the next one says I Began the book March 1821 and revised it April the 2nd signed Henry Scham? And then another that reads I caution myself not to ? (I think revise or a word meaning the same is the word) this book and I wish to retain the principles for much is contained in the notes and examples, (then some initials which I think are DEM).

I really don't know how to exactly tell you the condition of this old book as it is almost 200 years old and hard to believe it is even still in tact. I will do my best to describe the condition but please understand for it's age I would consider it to still be in good or better condition and you might disagree. Anyway; The leather cover though showing a substantial amount of wear is still in tact with the exception of a small piece at the top of the backbone, and a 2" crack at the seam of the top back cover right at the point of the backbone crease, and a tiny piece missing at the bottom of the backbone. The binding surprisingly is still nice and tight and all the pages appear to be in tact with the exception of one of the plate pages of angles and such, which is still in the book but loose. The title page as you can see from the photo has some writing and notes on it as well does the blank cover page across from it. There are a few other pages with mathematical notes and such written on them but not many. Also as one of the photos in the extra picture links will show, there is a lot of foxing and discoloration of the pages. (but who wouldn't be a bit discolored and spotted at 200 years old) Some edge wear and brittleness of same on some of the pages and a couple of corner tears and small holes also, but not many and not bad. The book measures approx. 9" long x 5 3/8" wide and is 7/8" thick containing 168 pages not including a few plates. I can't guarantee that all pages are in the book but I am almost sure that they are with the exception of the back blank cover pages of which the notes that I have shown below have been written and the excess of the page removed by the people who were reviewing / revising the book.
