Gurley Surveyor's Instrument Catalog
This is
one of the earliest W. & L. E. Gurley surveying instrument catalog I
have ever come across. The catalog is dated 1876 and is in beautiful
condition. It is so nice that I was almost afraid to attempt scanning a
few pages. The catalog is fully titled: A Manual of the Principal
Instruments Used in American Engineering and Surveying - Manufactured by
W. & L. E. Gurley Troy New York. There are 234 numbered pages plus
additional table of content and advertisements. The June 1st, 1876 price
list is bound in front and is just amazing. The chapters include ones on
plain compasses, the solar compass, the vernier transit, the surveyor's
transit, etc. There are full page illustrations of all the company's major
instruments. I have seen a reprint of the 1874 Gurley catalog recently.
This one is the original article from two years later, and in fabulous
condition. There are two wear spots on the cover, and the first 27 pages
have a very small bottom right corner stain which does not come near the
text. (See photo). Also, the fronticepiece and second page are loose from
the binding, but fully intact. The catalog is otherwise sound and without
blemishes. You will have to look hard to find an original 127 year old
catalog in better shape. For the serious collector of surveying
instruments.
