Description

This is an early W.& L.E. Gurley vernier compass in its original wooden case together with labels. The compass face is hand engraved which dates it prior to the 1870's - in the 1870's the company switched to machine engraving. The compass, which is in working order, is about 15.5" in length, and the blued steel needle is almost 6" in length. There are two levelers, an out keeper counter, a Vernier scale, and a needle release. Two sighting rods are stored in the wooden box. The brass compass and sighting rods have the original patina, i.e., have not been cleaned or polished. The wooden box has not been refinished - the exterior of the box has considerable wear, the interior is average condition for its age. The W.& L.E. Gurley Company was founded in the 1850's, so this compass could have been manufactured circa Civil War era. The compass has been stored for many years, and is new to the collectible market. Buyer pays shipping and insurance. A money order is requested.
