Description |
ARNOLD & CO.
Philadelphia
Surveyor's Compass
It constructed of all brass with a silvered face. The "fish eye" level is missing the fluid and the staff adapter is missing. Otherwise it is complete and in working order.
It is 13 ¾" long overall and the face is 5 ½" in diameter.
It has one basic movement effected by a gear rack and pinion. It will move the the compass face within a 20 degree limit for fine adjustment of the vernier scale on the opposite side.
It also has a needle lock. All of the controlls and locks are on the bottom.
The sight vanes are 7" tall.
If you have trouble with the pictures try using the reload or refresh button on your browser.
The sights pack away in the bottom of the case. The case is hand fitted to the compass.
The back has all of the screws. They all are original as far as I can see.
It was often used with a single post or staff often cut from a sapling. The adapter was fitted to the staff and often screwed on. This why they are often missing from the compass cases.
You can see that the socket fit into the case below.
The screws are all there. The adjusters and lock ups are in working order.
The face is excellent. All of the markings and increments are clear and legible.
The maker name "ARNOLD & CO - PHILADELPHIA" and all of the increments are engraved then blackened so they stand out on the silvered surface.
The vernier scale is also legible.
Below you can see the hand stamped numbers and the rack and pinion on the opposite side. It is locked and adjusted from underneath.
The case is about 14 ½" b
y 7" and 4" tall. It is missing the handle and there are no marks or papers. It is made from mahogany. The corners are mitered. It has forge head nails throughout. P>
