19th CENT. VERNIER COMPASS BY SAMUEL BROWNING I would like to offer for auction a early 19th century surveyors vernier compass by Samuel Browning. According to Smart, Browning was listed in 1805 in Boston,again in 1809 and again at 35 Broad Street in 1816 to 1825. Again on Broad Street Boston from 1829 to 1841. This compass is signed Samuel Browning , Baltimore . Neither Smart's or Bedini's reference books show a record for Samuel Browning in Batlimore. The compass ia 16 inches long with a 6 inch compass needle. There is also the staff mount but no case. The only obvious repair `is shown on the underside where the staff mount attaches to the compass body. Buyer to pay shipping/handling and insurance if desired.
