late 18th/early
19th Century, two sights and screws, the face engraved with
compass points, minute markers and inscribed G. Chandlee.
Winchester. In 19th Century wooden field case with hinged lid.
Goldsmith Chandlee, a member of the noted Cottey/Chandlee family
of Quaker clock and instrument makers, worked in Virginia from
1775 and in Winchester beginning in 1783 until his death in 1821.
Among his instruments is one made for surveyor Lawrence
Washington, nephew of George. That instrument is on display at
Mount Vernon. Several references (Elgin, 2001; Berdini, 1964;
Sotheby's, 1999) record variously from eight to fourteen extant
instruments by Chandlee. D. R. Beeks, Chairman, Committee on
Instrument Identification of the Surveyor's Historical Society
notes that this previously unrecorded compass is the twenty second
Chandlee instrument known. Compass has apparently original
outkeeper, dial and counter. Estimated
