Description |
In the research that I have been able to do on this rare piece, I have not been able to find any indication that Draper ever made a surveyor’s compass with 4 vanes. With the 4 vanes, it was possible to survey using both magnetic and True North. It is possible that the extra set of vanes was added to the compass as an improvement to the original instrument, but to all appearances it looks original.
The instrument was discovered in a barn in Chester County, Pennsylvania and, as the photos show, the brass is oxidized. The only apparent flaws with the compass is that it is missing the compass needle and one of the vanes is slightly bent (this, too shows in the photos). Both of the spirit levels are intact. The face of the compass appears to be silvered and, when a skilled repairman is able to remove the glass, it should be able to be polished to remove the tarnishing. Not being a skilled repairman, the only thing I have done was to remove the back of the compass to see if it was marked on the inside. It is. The name "Dickey" is scratched into the backplate. In front of the name there is a capital "N" followed by what is best described as a "fraction" with a lower case "L" over the mathematical symbol for pi. Perhaps this is an old abbreviation of the name Nathaniel? I have not been able to find any additional information on Mr. Dickey.
When the vanes are turned past the oxidized area, an engraved scale of degrees is revealed in the brass (this is shown in the photos). The compass itself measures approximately 4 & 5/8ths inches across and is 1 foot long from end to end. There is a fitting on the bottom to allow the compass to be mounted on a staff. I believe this is a unique instrument and it is being listed with a modest reserve.
