Description

great surveyors instrument.vernier compass made by frye and shaw at 222 water street, new york.all brass with two bubble levels that are both full and operable. addington frye and robert shaw were in business from 1836 to 1845.they made surveying and navigational instruments. they showed them at several exibitions and won several prizes.they only had about $20,000 gross income per year so probably did not make many of these.i cannot find any records that give specific amounts of each different instrument.there are no numbers that i can find on the instrument.it is about 14 inches long and about 6 inches wide. the compass needle is almost 5 inches long. there is a knob underneath that screws in to lock the needle in place. compass seems to work good.the sighting uprights are about 5-3/4 inches tall and have the original thumbscrews that hold them in place.there is a threaded hole on the bottom to hold the unit tight on the tripod but that thumbscrew is missing.this unit was probably not used for over 100 years but is still in very good condition with lots of patina on all parts.box is in VERY poor condition but is very repairable.this is a fine instrument that is in working condition.it always amazes and excites me to find something this old that is made so well.probably rare by these makers. shipping quoted when i get your address.
