Description

Description: 19th c. Surveying Compass Face inscription: W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy NY”. This instrument was crafted between 1852 and 1876. The compass incorporates a 15 ½” main plate with two level vials, a silvered needle ring with a 6” magnetic needle, a variation index with a slow-motion tangent screw with graduated arc and opposed vernier, an outkeeper counter (used to count chains measured), sight vanes, ball and socket mount, one original tripod and one single mount pole.

This represents the largest example of vernier compass made by this 19th century New York firm. The condition of this instrument is very good, no broken parts or serious blemishes. The Mahogany box is very nice and just shows minor scuffing. The label inside top lid is quite good with only a small quarter inch corner torn off. (See photo). The needle measures 6 inches and the overall length is approx. 16 inches. The top glass is in perfect original condition.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase a near complete (missing only the original chain and plumb bob) 19th century surveyors compass in fine condition.
