Description

Nice 1870's Gurley Pocket Telescopic Railroad Compass.

Nice 1870's Gurley Pocket Telescopic Railroad Compass
An uncommon early 4th quarter 19th century compass, designated by Gurley as their "Pocket Telescopic Railroad compass"…. A lacquered brass instrument (note some small dings in the finish) with levels and a full horizontal circle viewable in the silvered and engraved compass box, the exterior of the compass box marked with a graduated variation/vernier scale. The offset folding sight vanes when tilted will accept the auxiliary telescope which is fit with a full vertical circle clamp and slow motion tangent screws.

The compass retains both a 4-screw leveling base (lacking a clamp) and a staff mount. The box also retains the original plumb bob (very uncommon), screw driver and an original early Gurley label in the lid of the case. The original tripod is in good condition though lacks one clamp nut.

This is an uncommon 19th century convertible instrument in good condition retaining most of the original bright lacquer finish, and complete with case, label, tripod and accessories.
