Description |
~ A M
Massive, Decorative & Rare Baltimore Compass, circa 1818, signed by engraved block lettering on the compass face "Benjn. K Hagger, Maker, BALTIMORE". The compass is 16+" long with massive sight vanes and a 7" diameter compass and 6~1/4" blued needle. The compass incorporates a divided pewter needle ring (a very uncommon form), and a graduated sight vane (with zero reference on the opposite sight vane) and unusual decorative thumb screws.
The compass has beautiful decoratively engraved star-pattern face which includes decorative icons to the east, a design carryover from the Revolutionary War where the east was referenced to the enemy.
Benjamin K. Hagger (1769-1834) was a second generation instrument maker probably trained by his father Wm G. Hagger (1748-?) in Boston, then moving to Concord MA and finally to Baltimore. Baltimore compasses are very rare. This example is being released from a long-time private collection.

If you're the seller or the high bidder - now what?Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact
the winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping,
and where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly
for the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order
when payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the
winning bidder and the seller.
If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
