Description

The brass main plate is 14 7/8 inches long. The 6 ¾ inch compass has a 5 ¼ inch needle. The sight vanes are 6 ½ inches tall and are tapered in thickness. The needle lifter arm is operated from below. An interesting design feature is the mounting of the spirit levels in the compass box rim. The Virtual Museum of Surveying website has photos of 2 Oscar Hanks compasses but both have the levels mounted on the base. Both levels are functional. Also, the needle is an interesting design. It has on one end a flat counterweight about ½ inch long that is divided in degree increments. The needle balance is adjusted with a sliding counterweight on the other end. The brass is darkened with age but I will leave cleaning to the new owner. Two of the 4 screws that hold the compass box to the main plate are missing but the compass is still held tightly to the plate. The screws are not broken off—they have been removed at some time. The compass face retains about 25% of the original silvering. There are a couple of small flakes in the glass at the locking ring. According to Smart, Oscar Hanks was born in New York state about 1810. He was the third generation of New York instrument makers, starting with Benjamin Hanks c.1780 and continuing with Julius Hanks c.1810. Oscar took over the family business c.1834. He is listed in the Troy directories until 1845-46. He employed William Gurley as a shop foreman c.1840-44. The Gurley connection was trans-generational—William’s father had worked for Oscar’s father. In 1852 Oscar sold his property to the Gurley brothers where they established their instrument making business, going on to become the preeminent makers in the U.S. Terms: Buyer to pay shipping. No handling fee. Payment by cash, check, BidPay, or bank money order. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks for looking and good luck
