Description

Gurley Vernier Compass with Limb & Telescope

This is a very scarce instrument made by W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, New York. It may appear similar to a Surveyors Transit, however was defined as a Compass with Limb & Telescope, illustrated and sold in the Compass section of Gurley's catalogues.

This instrument is a highly developed form of Telescope Compass and has the added characteristics of a lightweight Transit. It was used for ordinary land surveying, preliminary or reconnaissance surveys, mine surveys, and in fact for a variety of work in which rapidity, ease of operation and portability, rather than extreme accuracy were the essential factors. The compass needle is of unusual length for such a compact instrument making it ideal for accurate compass surveys.

This lovely, small instrument stands only 9 3/4 inches tall, yet has a very large compass measuring 5 & 3/4 inches in diameter. The compass has a finely blued 4 1/2 inch needle and 2 spirit levels. The Vernier is also located on the compass face.

The compass is engraved "W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y." with a "Star" at the North position, while East & West are reversed. Silvering of the Compass dial is good, showing some wear centrally.

This compass instrument has a small 6 & 1/2 inch telescope with a diameter of 1 inch. The underslung telescopic level with fluid intact, measures 3 inches long with graduations on the vial. The full vertical circle measures 4 inches in diameter with 0 to 99 graduated each way on sterling silver.

The original finish of this instrument appears to have been a combination of bright lacquered brass and morocco black. The brass has developed a nice patina, some of the morocco finish remains but is flaking away. Optics are extremely clear with crosshairs intact.

The Mahogany case measures 8 x 6 x 11 inches and comes with a plumb bob and small adjusting tool. The interior of the case in in rough condition with little remaining of the Gurley Lable, however the exterior is in pretty good shape with metal Gurley Plate and sturdy leather strap.

In two years of watching Gurley auctions on eBay I have never seen one of these uncommon Compass instruments. Please see photo below of this Instrument pictured next to a Gurley Vernier Transit, (now at auction - Item #1412202245) for size comparison.
