Description
Another amazing instrment that has never been offered for sale and probably the most complex early Transit that you will see this year. I sold the Gurley Pocket RR Compass with Telescope Last year at this time. You are bidding on what I believe is a W & LE Gurley Pocket Solar Compass with Side Telescope and Verticle Circle. This comes complete with it's Gurley Tripod, an unusual Pole mount, Original Box, and Tools. It's all here, nothing is missing. I will describe this in sections: COMPASS: The Instrument is in wonderful and untouched 100 percent original condition, it has never seen abuse or restoration attemps. The Finish will grade somewhere in the high 90's for completeness with wear showing at the high points of the compass rim edge and of course at the Tripod Mount levelers with a few very small spots in normal areas near adjusters. All 3 levels are in tact, Compass dial, Az, El and Solar Scales Silvering is nice. The folding compass sight hairs are in place, all Telescope optics in tact (some dirt in the lens and I see as Stradia hair that runs vertically but not one in the horizontal plane). The Telecope lens cap is there and all adjustments function. No missing screws or adjusters, everything on this unit is free and appears to function properly. The Black finished parts appear to have a Gun Metal type finish which is unusual. The Compass inner scale is gear driven by an ajustment for fine orientation. There is an outer fine Azmuth scale with a glass cover and an elvation verneir on the telescope. The mounting base has 4 level adjustment knobs. There is an unusual azmuth coarse adjustment on the underside of the compass that also has a tilt fine adjust built in. Another unusual feature is what appears to be a counterweight that stores in the carry case and fits an opening in the Azmuth base oposite the telescope. SOLAR ATTACHMENT: The Solar attachment packs in the box and installs with a single nut onto the Circle scale and elevation scale which fold flat for traveling. The solar attachment has a small lens in one end and a screw driven scale which is silvered. Nothing appears to be missing or damaged. POLE MOUNT: There is also a Pole mount with an unusual adjustment mechanism that stores on the Box. FITTED CARRY CASE: The entire unit folds down very compactly into this small 8 3/4" by 9 1/4" by 5 3/4" tall box which was designed for traveling by horseback. It has an original patinal on the outside, clean interior and no damage other than a broken leather strap. There is an overpasted label over the Gurley lablel of Samuel Thaxter & Son, Boston who was a reseller. TOOLS: The original screwdriver and wrench supplied by Gurley are with it. TRIPOD: It comes with a light weight folding and collapsable leg tripod that is marked "W&LE Gurley, TROY NY & PATENTED JULY 2, 1878" on the Brass fittings that hold the clamps and slides. The Tripod has an excellent and original patina with only on outer tip cap missing. SHIPPING: Due to value Shipping on the Transit is by Registered Mail.
