Description
This is a scarce theodolite surveyor's transit manufactured by the W. & L.E. Gurley company of Troy, New York, c1885-1905. They started putting serial numbers on their pieces in 1905-8, and this piece doesn't have a serial number. Complete with the original pine carrying box and brass-bound tripod, this item is in UNTOUCHED ORIGINAL CONDITION - it has not been polished or lacquered in any way. This is the 1/2 arc unit, with three bubble levels with their original glass and green tinted contents, and the bubbles are still there. Retaining most of its original black patination, this unit has never been repainted, repaired or polished. All thumbwheels and adjustments are present and working; the lenses are clear and sharp and the NSEW glassed faceplate is sharp and unscratched. The surface of the dial is gold and silver, with etched numbers. The crosshairs are there, and there are no numbers stamped on the components. The protective glass over the dials is intact and unscratched. The box, constructed of pine and mounted with brass screws, is in excellent shape, with only age cracks on the top and missing footpads on the bottom. This hand-dovetailed box has an excellent patina, and appears to have the original finish, although some of these boxes were leather covered. This one shows no signs of such a covering, but it may have been removed many years back. The strap is a later replacement, but is still made of leather. The interior retains most of the clamps and fittings, and comes complete with the original brass/copper/steel plumb bob with string, and turned-wood handled screwdriver for adjustments. The original lock is present, but the key isn't. The original brass bound tripod is complete and in excellent original condition, with no chips or damage, and all brass banding and thumbscrews are present. Also included is the original screw-on wood with brass-threads tripod cap, as shown. I believe that this piece of equipment may be also called a light mountain transit (I don't find it all that light...). A rare untouched piece of pioneering American surveying equipment, and a highlight for any display or collection. Shipping will be in two parcels, and will be charged at the exact rate as quoted by the Post Office. We estimate somewhere in the $40 range for the US (other spots may vary) - insured is higher. We try to describe the item and its condition as thoroughly as possible, but emails & additional picture requests are welcome, and will be cheerfully answered as quickly as possible. Please ask any questions before bidding. We accept MO/cheques/Visa/Mastercard. Shipping is from Canada (actual cost - no handling fees) and mailed payments need 48 cents postage. Canadian residents must add the applicable tax(es). Thank you. This is another markandfiona auction. For photos of all my Current Ebay items Click HERE

The adjustment screws, pivots and bearings are all smooth in action, the cross-hairs in the viewer are present and the lens is clear and clean, although we haven't cleaned the lenses. There is no brass lens cap. We haven't polished, adjusted or cleaned this item, and it is in superb, clean original condition.
