Description |
This is a late 1800s surveyor's transit & beautiful grained oak and brass transit stand. I took it to a surveyor's store in Boise and they did a sight test on it.(they loved the instrument and did this for free) They said it still takes perfect survey points and that it was in excellent condition.
The family I got this from, (traded fly fishing antiques for it), said that it belonged to grandfather that helped survey Chicago in the old days. Got to see a couple of pictures of him in early 1900s, surveying Boise.
Etched into the brass on one of the arms?, is an H and H & L company.
Etched into the metal N,W,S,E, plate under glass is the name:
Peter Heer and Company
Chicago
463
Near this in, etched into the brass is:
Lally Instrument Compay
Denver, Colorado
The North, South, etc. is beautifully etched with fancy scroll work.(sorry but I could not get camera close enough to capture this)
the Oak Transit Stand came with it but I can't get the transit to screw into the stand. (I think the silver colored cover on stand is supposed to come off but I can't figure it out. Winning bid will pay fixed shipping, packing, insurance amount of $48. (will only ship to mainland U.S.)Dimensions:
