Description
Rare 18th Century Rittenhouse Surveyors Compass. David Rittenhouse lived from 1732 to 1796 and was a highly esteemed surveyor, clockmaker, and telescope maker. He made two surveyors compasses for General George Washington. For further information on Rittenhouse’s distinguished career, visit the following websites: http://www.britannica.com/seo/d/david-rittenhouse/ and http://wwwsgi.ursus.maine.edu/gisweb/spatdb/acsm/ac94127.html . The instrument is approximately 15 inches long, with a diameter of about 6 1/8 inches. There is no glass in the compass, and it does not have a needle. The instrument has not been cleaned and has a patina. Rittenhouse compasses may be found in the Smithsonian and several other distinguished museums and libraries in the United States. If you have ANY questions, please ask them BEFORE the auction ends. I will be happy to add additional information to this listing as I receive it. Sales Policies: Your item will be shipped by registered mail. Buyer pays actual shipping and insurance fees. Payment must be by certified check only. Thank you for bidding on this item!!!!

On Feb-03-01 at 04:04:40 PST, seller added the following information:

I'm getting a lot of mail indicating that this piece may actually have been made by David's brother Benjamin. Here are a few of the comments: "I may be mistaken but I believe what you have is a compass made by Davids brother Benjamin. Benjamin made most of the compasses and the faces of his were usually more elaborate engraving than Davids. I have a compass by Benjamin and it is signed on the limb in script,"B. Rittenhouse". The dial face is very similiar to yours, whereas Davids were usually fairly plain." and "Also, do you feel this one was actually made by David? Most of the compasses are credited to his brother Benjamin so a David made one is even rarer." Thank you all for the information! It's interesting to see the history of this piece unfold.
