A Civil War era Surveying Instrument, Signed by engraved script on the main frame, Stackpole & Bro. New York 1087. This early 1860s surveyors wye level is a very nice example. It breaks down into two pieces ans stows in the original dovetailed case which includes the original trade label.
Stackpole and Brother are listed as having begun business in New York in 1851. They made specialty exploration and recon instruments including instruments used in recon, road and bridge building during the Civil War. A very nice early surveying instrument, complete and in its original box with the original trade label still in the lid.
