Description |
A late 3rd or early 4th quarter 19th century transit signed by engraved script on the compass face, Stackpole & Bros, New York 2234, with 4~3/8 needle and 10~3/4 telescope, a 4 screw leveling base with the old style opposed slow motion screws on the non-recording horizontal motion and directly threaded slow motion tangent screw on the recording motion. The standards have the unusual feature of allowing one to remove the telescope from its bearings.
Stackpole & Brother are listed from 1851 to 1910. This instrument includes features consistent with 3rd quarter 19th century instruments. Stackpole made very fine instruments, many of which were used by for exploration and during the Civil War for recon and mapmaking. The instrument is in good condition with the original dovetailed case, sun shade and lens cover.
