Surveying Improved:or the Whole Art both in Theory and Practice Fully Demonstrated. In Four Parts.Henry Wilson,Mathematician. The Fifth Edition with Additions embellished and illustrated with Proper Cuts and also accurately revised, corrected, improved and augmented.Brown leather boards and spine, raised bands on spine, printed for T.Longman,C.Hitch,and L.Hawes,J.Rivington,W.Johnston,S.Crowder and Co.and B.Law,copyright 1762,555 pages with 11 folding plates. To Which is now added Geodoesia Accurata or Surveying made Easy by the Chain only.Shewing how to measure, plot, divide and delineate any Parcel of Land, without the trouble and Charge of any other Instrument but the Chain, with proper Directions for Reducing,Mapping,Colouring and finding the Content after an accurate and expeditious Manner. Also a New Essay upon Solids.Shewing how the Dimensions of Timber-Trees both standing and lying may be exactly taken and readily Measured various ways vis.Vulgarly,Decimally,Duodecimally,Instrumentally and Tabularly by William Hume,Philomath. This is an early and scarce book on the art and practice of surveying by Henry Wilson an English mathematician instructor and proponent of the controversial theory of Globular Projection who then turned his attention to the science of surveying. The first part of the book covers arithmetic including numeration, reduction tables, addition, subtraction, reduction, the rule of three and decimal arithmetic followed by definitions, theorems and plain trigonometry, part three is on the description and use of Surveying Instruments with sections on chains, the Surveying-Wheel,the Theodolite, the Circumferenter, the Semicircle, the Plain-Table and scales, the final part concerns Practical Surveying with chapters on "to plot a field at one station with the several varieties,to measure and plot a whole Manor,Estate,Farm,to plot mountainous, uneven ground,to divide land in any proportion required in thirteen useful problems,to reduce the plan of an estate,Garden to a prospect,of County-surveying in which is included surveying of roads, rivers etc.to compute the contents of a survey only by the pen and tables,to measure Artificers Work as painting, glazing, how to take an inaccessable Altitude,of Transparent Colours for Maps etc. There is also an Appendix "Of levying, conveying water".The "Geodoesia Accurata" part of the book by William Hume shows surveying made easy by the Chain Only showing how to measure, plot, divide and delineate any Parcel of Land with exquisite directions for reducing, mapping, colouring and finding the content after an accurate and expeditious manner.Highly detailed description of how to survey by the chain originally written in 1740.The final sections of the book include a "New Essay upon Solids"how the dimensions of Timber-Trees both standing and lying may be readily taken in order to Mensuration, how to measure or take regular the Dimensions of Timber of Stone,Tables for the ready finding by Inspection the content of any piece of Timber and Stone the Girt or side of the square as also the length being known".This very detailed book also contains 11 folding plates which include several great plates one showing building on a hilly area with surveying details, another showing windmill, beacon, house, church, and another with drawing of what appears to be a castle tower with surveying details, the rest of the folding diagrams are quite technical and involve diagrams.Ten of the folding plates are intact and still attached to the book the first plate (a detailed diagram) is torn into three pieces but appears to be complete and one part is still attached to the book, the other ten plates are complete and in varying condition with tears, foxing, spotting etc.The overall condition of the book is good, binding is tight, all pages intact except the right front endpaper is missing, there is considerable browning and spotting and foxing to the pages, some pages are also stained, the pages are still supple though and not chipping, considerable wear to cover boards and the leather, rubbing to cover, wear to edges, the board covers are worn through at the edges also,am not sure if the raised band leather spine is original to the book or was replaced by an earlier owner but it is an early leather spine, there is considerable wear to the top and bottom of the spine, rubbing to the leather on the spine, the previous owner has also done mathematical calculations in pencil on the front and rear endpapers and several last pages. The actual size of the book is approximately 5 by 8 1/4 inches. The condition of the book is good and despite the staining and foxing and brown spotting this is a somewhat scarce and rare book published in London in 1762 on the art and science of surveying and it would make a nice addition to your vintage surveying or early science book collection, quite detailed. These early science books are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and this is certainly an early book on the science and practice of surveying.
