Description

Gurley Surveyors Compass with Tripod, Manual & Chain. A wonderful example of W. & L. E. Gurley’s Plain Surveyors Compass. Gurley states in their catalogs that “the instrument is used chiefly in surveys of new lines, or in the preparation of maps, where the variation of the needle in not required”. This fine example, which retains most of the original lacquer finish, has a 4” needle and measures approximately 12.5 long. The compass face is signed in script “W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, N. Y.” This compass is complete and in good order; it includes the two sight vanes with thumb screws (one of the vanes has two movable peep sights), and the original tripod with ball and socket attachment. The tripod is in outstanding original condition. The instrument is housed in a beautiful hand-dovetailed mahogany case; the inside lid of the case features a great Gurley trade label (note that this has come unglued). Also included is a 1903 Gurley’s Manual of American Engineers’ and Surveyors’ Instruments, and a 66 ft. surveyors chain. The manual is in good condition and is loaded with pictures and descriptions of Gurley’s various instruments. The chain has brass handles and tallies; the handles are stamped “W & L.E. GURLEY TROY. N.Y.” and “66Ft IRON No. 8”. This outfit would make a fine addition to any collection. Please email any questions. Cashiers check or money order only please. Will ship within the United States only.
