A good original NY Civil War
Era Surveying compass, 15" long, signed by engraved Script on
the silvered compass face, "E. Brown & Son, New York".
According to Charles Smart's book, The Makers of Surveying
Instruments in America, Edmund Brown was active in New York
from 1841 to 1863; he died in 1867. This compass is bright
brass and is complete with a newly fitted ball and socket
joint and an old jacobs staff (about 4' tall with a brass and
iron point). The compass is complete with both working bubble
levels and a properly functioning 5~1/2" needle. This is a
well built and substantial mid 19th century surveying
instrument typical of what was used during the civil war. It
would be perfect for reenactment and/or museum display.
