Extremely
rare Surveyors Compass made by G. Davis, Leeds made in a
mahogany box. I believe I have the right name for this
instrument. The compass is finely divided in degrees and the
makers name G.DAVIS LEEDS is inscribed on the face. The date I
have taken from "Websters Instrument Makers Database" Website.
The compass has its original wooden tripod to which it is
mounted by means of a special solid metal adaptor. There is a
second tripod which would have had screw in legs. The adaptor
itself is quite unique with tapered fittings plus a ball
socket unit so allowing slight swivelling of the compass. When
the r.h. lid is closed it operates a lock for the compass
needle. The needle has very slight pit marks but still works
perfectly as a compass. In the closed position the box
measures 16cms x 16cms approx, and the tripod measures just
over 1 metre in height. The glass of the compass is broken,
but I still have a section of the glass enabling a new cover
to be made of correct size. This instrument could well be
classed as a museum item and is in good condition for its age.
My scientific instruments were mostly purchased in Wales from
a private family who have owned them for generations. A very
nice extremely rare instrument from this maker and is a must
for the collector of scientific instruments. PLEASE SEE MY
OTHER AUCTIONS FOR MORE RARE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS.
