This auction is for one Keuffel and
Esser survey compass with mahogany finger-jointed box, sight
vanes and ball and socket staff/tripod adapter/mount.
According to serial number 436xx, DOM is 1921. According to
1921 catalog this is a 5308, 14" compass body with 5" needle.
Complete with tally wheel (functional and nice). Sights
install and come off freely. Locating pins complete. Thumb
screws are perfect with non-buggered threads. Compass works
properly, needle moves freely and lift works properly to stop
needle motion while not in use. Both level vials are in
perfect working order (bubbles are present). Compass assembles
and functions properly. Baked enamel finish on compass is in
very nice used condition. I would suppose about 85%+ of origin
finish remains. Excerpted from 1921 catalog, "N5308, Large
Surveying Compass, bronzed, graduated to half degrees,
numbered in quadrants, needle about 5 in., plate 14 in.,
graduated sights, two spirit levels; with variation plate
reading minutes, and outkeeper (tally register). Ball joint
and socket (No. 5348-4) for Jacob staff mounting; in polished
mahogany Case with handle" By far the worst feature of this
outfit is the original box. I believe it to be mahogany. The
finger joint in one area will require re-glueing. There are a
couple cracks in the top and bottom. The cracks are not loose
or really unsightly. There are some interior pieces missing
(supports and separates the mounts). Label is not present
either. There you have it. Compass is nice but the box is less
than perfect. If you will only be satisfied with mint
condition, please wait for another auction. If you are looking
