This is a Keuffel & Esser Model 5088 Special
theodolite. An extra, wider-angle eyepiece
lens, and the two original wooden K&E carrying cases, are
included.
This illuminated theodoloite/transit is among a few such
K&E models designated "Bay Bridge" -- this one is #291 --
presumably used on the construction of the San Francisco Bay
Bridge, beginning in 1932; the serial number of this unit
dates its manufacture to that year.
Condition is mechanically and optically excellent. Some
small wear spots in the black paint on the telescope are from
rubbing on the carrying case fittings (extra felt is
recommended for the carry-case fittings). Overall the
instrument is very functional, clean and a handsome specimen.
The telescope portion is 14 inches long with
the slip-on sunshade attached.
The battery-powered lighting system
illuminates the scale on the horizontal circle and the
crosshairs in the telescope. The crosshair light is adjustable
with the rheostat. As you can see above, the lights work,
though one of the switches is slightly intermittent, probably
just dirty, but does work; and, it looks like there would be
two battery covers which are missing. Also note some light
paint wear along the edge of the base, and a small area of
adhesive remains (which could likely be cleaned off) from a
old sticker or ID plate.
Above: a close-up of the scale.A small amount of dust
etc. is seen under the glass but the scales are in good
shape and very readable.
Glass is clean, no scratches etc. The
secondary top level lifts off and the 'scope can be locked
down onto the yoke. Also shown above is the second, wide-angle
eyepiece lens which fits into the case.
Above: with the top level off. The finish is excellent
except for the small areas of carry-case rubbing
(including mild wear on the sunshade front edge). The locks
and controls, including focus, all work. There is verticle
movement with a lock, but no verticle circle or scale (hence,
with the illumination system, the "Special" special
designation).
This view shows the base, which is clean and in nice
condition. The movements are very smooth.
Above: the bottom of the leveling base, as seen mounted on
the special board which slides into slots in the carrying
case.
No tripod or plumb bob with this unit, but both carrying
cases are included:
The carry cases have wear, and a rubber foot is
missing from the larger case, but both are in good overall
condition with sturdy leather straps. A circuit
diagram is pinned inside the lid of the smaller case.
