Description |
Surveyors measuring chain possibly? I got this from an estate auction and there were many very valuable vintage tools present. I am only assuming that this is a measuring chain for a surveyor. It is marked W & L E Gorley Troy N Y on the handle which has a brassy look and feel to it. This is obviously painstakingly hand crafted and the attention to detail in the linking is great. There is as you can see in the photos there are shapes made possibly of brass at different distances that appear to swing freely and maybe act as a marker or plumb bob? I would have to guess also due to the wear on the links that someone really used this alot as they show thinning as if worn. There are newer tin tags reading 30FT & 40FT also. If there is something I can look at closer for you please e-mail with questions. There was tape around this when I got it and there is some tape residue that I can feel but not see, I do not want to attempt to clean this and I will leave that up to the bidder. Winning bidder to pre-pay winning bid amount plus fixed shipping charges of $6.10 within 10 days of auctions end or item will be relisted and negative feedback posted. Please take your bid seriously and do not bid if you do not intend on completing your end of the transaction. Ask all questions and make sure they are answered prior to placing a bid. Thank you and good luck!! ** PLEASE NOTE ** I have been informed that this is in fact a surveyors tool often refered to as a Gunter chain or Gunters Chain named after the inventor of the chain land measuring system in the late 1800's.

On Apr-16-00 at 18:15:12 PDT, seller added the following information:There is a possibility that the maker of this chain is "Gurley" and not Gorley as described, the top of the second letter is not stamped deep enough for me to be sure and I wanted to add this as a response to many questions.
On Apr-18-00 at 02:41:37 PDT, seller added the following information:Please note that I have not extended this chain to its full length to measure. I also cannot guarentee that it does not have vintage repairs. If you see something in the photos that you have a question about please e-mail me, I do not want you disappointed. As my description stated I am not claiming to be an expert on this item and you are purchasing it 'as is' due to that fact.

If you're the seller or the high bidder - now what?
Details for the seller and high bidder(s):
The seller should contact the
winning bidder(s) with information on the total cost, including shipping, and
where to send payment. The winning bidder(s) must pay the seller directly for
the item(s), and it is the seller's responsibility to fulfill the order when
payment terms are met. The binding contract of the auction is between the
winning bidder and the seller.
If the seller is unable to establish contact with the high bidder within 3 business days, the seller may contact the next highest bidder. Therefore, if the high bidder does not contact the seller within 3 business days of the end of the auction, he/she may lose the place as winning bidder, and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder warning, both of which can ultimately lead to suspension from eBay.
